Riviera pottery was adapted from Homer Laughlin Pottery Company's Century line in the mid 1930s. The shape was originally available in only ivory velum and usually decorated with decals. But when HLCo began dipping its lighter weight dinnerware into its Fiesta glazes the pottery took on another dimension. Uninterupted by floral decals, the solid colored glazes accentuated the architectural and art-deco lines of designer Frederick Rhead's modern vision. Designed with humble expectations, the mix-n-match ware became a long standing success at the five-and dime. A small line with less than 20 pieces available, collectors of Fiesta and Harlequin will delight in adding an occasional Riviera piece to their collections. Available in original radioactive red, a bright harlequin yellow, original green and mauve with plain ivory pieces drifting over from the Century line. |
